Duke Huan of Qi was one of the most famous overlords in China’s Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC).
He became the ruler of the State of Qi at a young age. He was open‑minded and willing to accept good advice. He appointed a wise prime minister named Guan Zhong and trusted him fully. With Guan Zhong’s help, Duke Huan carried out reforms to strengthen his state’s economy, army and governance.
He respected the Zhou royal family and helped weaker states stop wars and fight invaders. Other states admired him, so he became the first overlord (hegemon) of the Spring and Autumn Period. His story shows the importance of employing talented people and good leadership.
