The Master said:
“Yan Hui was such a person –
he chose the Doctrine of the Mean.
Whenever he grasped even a single point of goodness,
he held it close to his heart with unwavering devotion and never let it go.”
子曰:「回之為人也,擇乎中庸,得一善,則拳拳服膺而弗失之矣。」
Note
This chapter from the Doctrine of the Mean presents Yan Hui – Confucius’ most beloved disciple – as the ideal model who directly answers the dilemma raised in the previous chapter: “Everyone claims wisdom and chooses the Mean, yet cannot hold to it for even a month.” While ordinary people fail to sustain their commitment despite intellectual assent, Yan Hui exemplifies the noble character who truly knows and therefore steadfastly practices, grasps goodness and never lets it slip away.
“Choosing the Doctrine of the Mean” shows that Yan Hui did not passively accept dogma but actively committed himself to the Mean as the guiding principle of life. The phrase “whenever he grasped even a single point of goodness, he held it close to his heart and never lost it” is especially significant. It conveys deep sincerity and reverence, embrace the goodness inwardly and embody it in action. This reveals that Yan Hui’s understanding of the Way was not abstract theorizing, but a process of internalizing every spark of virtue and every insight into lived practice – gradually accumulating until moral character was fully formed.
Zhu Xi, in his Commentary on the Doctrine of the Mean, praises Yan Hui for “not transferring anger and not repeating mistakes,” precisely because he could “guard what he had already attained.” Zhu Xi emphasizes that true self-cultivation lies not in extensive knowledge, but in cherishing and preserving even the smallest seeds of goodness. This discipline of “holding fast to what one has gained” is the key to overcoming the common failure of short-lived resolve.
Thus, this chapter not only offers a model of moral cultivation but also reveals the core of Confucian spiritual practice: moral growth begins with the tiniest good and is perfected through unwavering perseverance. Yan Hui earned the title “Second Sage” precisely because he realized the Doctrine of the Mean through consistent, humble, daily commitment.
