Great Learning Chapter 1. The Path of Moral Cultivation

“The Way of the Great Learning lies in illuminating one’s inherent luminous virtue, in renewing the people, and in attaining the highest excellence.”

“Only after knowing where to stop can one become determined; only when determined can one be tranquil; only when tranquil can one be at peace; only when at peace can one reflect carefully; and only through careful reflection can one achieve results.

All things have roots and branches; all affairs have endings and beginnings. Knowing what comes first and what comes later brings one near to the Way.”

大學之道,在明明德,在親民,在止於至善。知止而后有定,定而后能靜,靜而后能安,安而后能慮,慮而后能得。物有本末,事有終始,知所先後,則近道矣。

Note

This passage comes from The Great Learning, one of the Four Books of Confucianism, traditionally attributed to Zengzi. Its central idea emphasizes that the logical foundation for self-cultivation, family regulation, state governance, and bringing peace to the world begins with manifesting one’s innate luminous virtue (“illuminating bright virtue”). The phrase “renewing the people”, interpreted by Zhu Xi as “transforming the people” (“renovate the people”), refers to morally uplifting the populace through education and example so they continually renew their virtue. “Attaining the highest good” (“attaining the highest excellence”) signifies the ultimate ideal of moral perfection.

The subsequent sequence – “knowing where to stop > determination > tranquility > peace > reflection > attainment” – outlines an inner path of moral cultivation, moving from setting a clear goal to achieving mental composure and rational deliberation.

Finally, the emphasis on “roots and branches, beginnings and ends” underscores the Confucian view that understanding priorities and proper order is essential to approaching the Way.

Altogether, this reflects the Confucian ethical-political philosophy that links inner sagehood with outward kingship, integrating knowledge and action.
