Dao De Jing – Chapter 40

The Dao, in its pure state, eludes labels of existence or void, motion or stillness, opposition or alignment. Human minds, bound by dualities, craft these distinctions. Our perceived world—a construct of senses and thought—veils reality’s true face.

The movement of the Dao
By contraries proceeds;
And weakness marks the course
Of Dao’s mighty deeds.

All things under heaven sprang from It as existing (and named); that existence sprang from It as non- existent (and not named).

Note

All things arise from formlessness, dance through form, then dissolve anew. This cosmic pulse bends always toward its inverse, governed not by mortal wishes but the Dao’s immutable law:

“Reversion drives the Dao’s motion;
Softness enacts its work.”

Applied Wisdom:

  • Reverse-engineer the self: Dissolve delusions, diminish ignorant afflictions and attachments by leaning into the Dao’s counterintuitive flow.
  • To prolong an entity’s existence: Embed its antithesis within it.
  • To achieve greatness: Embrace adversity and opposition.
  • Advocate moderation, balance, and harmony in thought and action; avoid extremes.

Further Reading

Chapter Twenty-Five emphasizes the eternal nature of the Tao, which “stands alone and does not change, revolves without ceasing,” while Chapter Forty reveals its direction of movement as “cyclical and transformative toward its opposite.” Together, they point to the dual attributes of the Tao as the fundamental force of the cosmos—both eternally existent and dynamically operational.

Chapter Forty-Two states, “The Tao gave birth to the One; the One gave birth to the Two; the Two gave birth to the Three; and the Three gave birth to all things. All things carry Yin and embrace Yang, blending vital energy to achieve harmony,” revealing how all things are generated through the unity of opposites. Chapter Forty notes, “All things under heaven are born of Being, and Being is born of Non-being,” revealing the transformative relationship between “Being” and “Non-being.” Together, they construct a complete generative chain: “Tao > Non-being > Being > all things.”

反者道之動;弱者道之用。天下萬物生於有,有生於無。
