Why Wukong never sought help from his sworn brother Zhenyuanzi?

In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong’s “sworn brotherhood” with Zhenyuanzi (Great Immortal Zhenyuan) was a compromise born of extraordinary circumstances.

His subsequent refusal to seek aid from this “elder brother” stems from their inherent status differences, the nature of their relationship, and the core logic of the pilgrimage itself.

The Nature of their Brotherhood: Ritual of Reconciliation

The oath between Sun Wukong and Great Immortal Zhenyuan followed the incident of the toppled Ginseng Fruit Tree. This pact symbolized political reconciliation and a balance among multiple powers, not genuine personal camaraderie.

A Stark Status Disparity

Their positions were worlds apart. Wukong keenly understood the vast power gap between them. His attitude toward Great Immortal Zhenyuan was one of awe and reverence, not intimacy.

Zhenyuanzi’s “Neutral Stance”

Though aligned with the Daoist pantheon, Zhenyuanzi remained aloof from Buddhist-Daoist conflicts. The pilgrimage was a Buddhist-led mission to spread teachings eastward. As the Ancestor of Earthly Immortals, Zhenyuanzi needed to maintain an image of detached neutrality. Aiding Wukong (a Buddhist agent) risked provoking suspicion among Daoist factions (like Laozi’s lineage).

Sun Wukong’s Pride

The core of Wukong’s character is his unyielding nature. His choices for assistance followed an unspoken rule: he would turn only to peers (like the Bull Demon King or Zhu Bajie) or entities indebted to him (e.g., Celestial Court deities or Guanyin). He rarely bowed to those who overwhelmingly outmatched him.

Practical Alternatives

Wukong had more suitable channels for aid on the journey:

  • Guanyin Bodhisattva (direct overseer of the mission) and Buddha (the chief designer)
  • The Celestial Court (owing him favors from his Great Havoc in Heaven)
  • Various deities (many with prior connections)

These dignity-preserving channels could resolve crises without humiliation, eliminating any need to involve Zhenyuanzi.
