The Analects – Chapter 9.16

Confucius said, “When outside, I serve dukes and ministers; at home, I serve my father and elder brothers. In matters of mourning, I never fail to do my utmost; I am never overcome by wine. What difficulty is there for me in these things?”

Note

Though seemingly modest, this statement from the Analects profoundly reflects Confucius’s emphasis on ethical conduct in everyday life. He lists four fundamental virtues: loyalty (serving public officials), filial piety and fraternal respect (serving parents and elder brothers), reverence (exerting full effort in funerals), and self-restraint (never being enslaved by alcohol). These are not grand, heroic deeds but ordinary responsibilities expected of any conscientious person. His rhetorical question – “What difficulty is there for me?” – is not boastful but conveys that once one genuinely embraces ritual and righteousness, practicing these norms becomes natural and effortless. This aligns with the Confucian view that the Way (Dao) resides precisely in daily human relations and routine conduct – not in lofty abstractions. Moreover, his specific mention of not being “overcome by wine” underscores the Confucian commitment to self-discipline and rational clarity, rejecting indulgence. Altogether, the passage reveals the foundation of the Confucian ideal personality: moral excellence is cultivated through consistent adherence to ethical norms in ordinary life.

Ziyou said, “In mourning, express genuine grief – and that is enough.” Analects 19.14 (Zi Zhang)

Both highlight sincerity in funeral rites; Confucius’s “dare not fail to exert effort” aligns with expressing authentic sorrow without excess.
