The Analects – Chapter 203 (8.17). Confucius on the urgency and reverence of learning

8.17
The Master said, “Learn as if you were following someone whom you could not catch up, as though it were someone you were frightened of losing.”

子曰:「學如不及,猶恐失之。」

Notes

This statement from the Analects vividly conveys reverence for knowledge, urgency in learning, and cherishment of acquired wisdom, revealing the Confucian attitude of “endless learning and relentless refinement”.

“I exert myself to the point of forgetting my meals; I am so joyful in pursuit of learning that I forget my worries; I do not even realize that old age is approaching.”(Analects 7.19)

The ultimate state of dedication to learning depicted in this line is a vivid reflection of the sense of urgency embodied in the notion “studying as if fearing to fall behind”. Moreover, the spiritual realm of “finding such joy in learning as to forget one’s worries” can alleviate the anxiety of “fearing that what one has learned might be lost”, turning learning into a conscious and joyful lifelong pursuit.
