The Master said, “Incomparable indeed was Hui! A handful of rice to eat, a gourdful of water to drink, living in a mean street – others would have found it unendurably depressing, but to Hui’s cheerfulness it made no difference at all. Incomparable indeed was Hui!”

子曰：「賢哉回也！一簞食，一瓢飲，在陋巷。人不堪其憂，回也不改其樂。賢哉回也！」

This passage from the Analects is the profound praise of Yan Hui which uses stark material-spiritual contrast to illuminate the Confucian ideal of “contentment in poverty while devoted to Dao”. True joy springs not from material abundance, but from unwavering commitment to the Dao — affirming the ultimate triumph of spiritual values over worldly desires.

Also Confucius claimed elsewhere:

“Eating coarse grains, drinking plain water, and resting my bent arm as a pillow – joy is still to be found in these. Wealth and rank obtained through unrighteous means are to me no more than floating clouds.”(Analects 7.16)

Using his own aspirations as an example, Confucius shows that a minimalist material life does not hinder the joy of upholding the Dao. He clearly rejects wealth and status gained by violating morality, and adheres to the bottom line that “the Dao is above material gain”.
