The Analects – Chapter 9.20

Confucius said, “The one who never shows laziness when I speak to him – is it not Yan Hui?”

Note

This statement from the Analects highly praises Yan Hui (Yan Yuan) for his unwavering focus, diligence, and perseverance in learning and self-cultivation. Confucius valued students who could “hear one and understand ten” and who “never transferred anger or repeated a mistake,” and Yan Hui exemplified this ideal by internalizing teachings and consistently putting them into practice. “Never lazy” here means more than just staying awake during lectures; it signifies an unrelenting commitment to the Way – no matter how much he understood or progressed, he never slackened in effort. Among all his disciples, only Yan Hui was repeatedly described by Confucius as “fond of learning” and “never departing from humaneness (benevolence).” This reflects Confucius’s educational criterion: true learning is not passive reception but active, sustained, and tireless inner transformation. The rhetorical exclamation “Is it not Yan Hui?” also conveys Confucius’s deep appreciation for an ideal disciple – and a subtle lament over how rare such steadfastness is among others.

Duke Ai asked, “Which of your disciples loved learning most?” Confucius replied, “There was Yan Hui – he loved learning, never transferred anger, and never repeated a fault. Alas, he died young! Now there is no one; I have heard of no one else who truly loved learning.” Analects 6.3 (Yong Ye)

Both highlight Yan Hui’s exceptional diligence and moral consistency; “not repeating faults” and “never lazy” both reflect continuous self-improvement.

The Master said, “Hui could keep his mind aligned with humaneness for three months; the others attain it only for a day or a month at best.” Analects 6.7 (Yong Ye)

Reinforces Yan Hui’s unique capacity for sustained moral focus – directly related to “never being lazy” in pursuing the Way.
