Zigong was fond of criticizing others. The Master said, “Ci (Zigong), are you already so virtuous? As for me, I have no time for that.”
Note
This dialogue from the Analects of Confucius reveals his profound view on the relationship between self-examination and judging others.
“Criticizing others”means evaluating or commenting on other people’s faults. Although Zigong was a gifted disciple, he sometimes indulged in judging others based on his own standards. Instead of direct rebuke, Confucius gently corrected him through rhetorical questioning and self-reference: true cultivation lies in focusing on one’s own shortcomings, not others’ failings.
When Confucius says, “As for me, I have no time for that,” he is not being modest but emphasizing that self-cultivation is so demanding that one barely has time to correct oneself – let alone scrutinize others. This echoes the principle in Analects 15.20: “The noble person seeks within himself; the petty person seeks from others.”
The passage also redefines “virtue”: true excellence does not lie in eloquence or sharp judgment of others, but in self-discipline, ritual propriety, and daily introspection. Recognizing Zigong’s outward brilliance, Confucius guides him toward inner refinement.
Confucianism advocates “being strict with oneself but lenient toward others” (Analects 15.14). Excessive criticism wastes energy and breeds arrogance and bias – both contrary to the Way of benevolence.
In short, Confucius reminds us: rather than busy yourself judging others, focus on improving yourself – that is the true path to becoming a noble person.
