When Gongxi Hua was sent on a mission to Qi State, Master Ran asked that Hua’s mother might be granted an allowance of grain.
The Master said, “Give her a cauldron full.” Ran said that was not enough. The Master said, “Give her a measure.”
Master Ran gave her five bundles. The Master said, “When Chi went to Qi he drove sleek horses and was wrapped in light furs. There is a saying, ‘A gentleman helps out the necessitous; he does not make the rich richer still.’”
子華使於齊,冉子為其母請粟。子曰:「與之釜。」請益。曰:「與之庾。」冉子與之粟五秉。子曰:「赤之適齊也,乘肥馬,衣輕裘。吾聞之也,君子周急不繼富。」
Notes
Gongxi Chi(also known as Gongxi Hua, courtesy name Zihua, a disciple of Confucius).
This dialogue from the Analects occurred between Confucius and his disciple Ran You (Ran Zi) concerns how to assist Gongxi Hua’s mother. Through their debate over “the measure of giving,” it vividly illustrates the Confucian principle of benevolent action: “Aid the distressed; do not enrich the wealthy“. Help should prioritize those in genuine need rather than adding superfluous comfort to the affluent.
Key Insights:
- Ethical triage: Confucius prioritizes life-saving aid over comfort enhancement.
- Anti-showcase charity: Rejects performative giving that ignores actual need hierarchies.
- Fiscal prudence: Public/private resources should serve maximum moral impact.
- Modern resonance: Prefigures effective altruism — directing resources where they matter most.
The philosophy of “providing relief to those in urgent need rather than augmenting the wealth of the affluent” does not negate the accumulation of wealth; instead, it emphasizes the ethical bottom line and value orientation of resource allocation: resources should prioritize meeting subsistence needs before supporting developmental needs; give priority to safeguarding vulnerable groups before accommodating the reasonable enrichment of advantaged groups.
The enlightenment of this philosophy for modern society ultimately points to the goals of “precision allocation, support for the weak and relief for the distressed, and common prosperity”, providing a traditional cultural wisdom for addressing the wealth gap and achieving social equity.
