Judging and acting before events unfold or principles appear is called foresight (foreknowledge). Foresight means groundless guesswork without real evidence.
Why so?
Zhan He sat with his disciple attending him. A cow mooed outside the gate.
The disciple said: “It is a black cow with a white forehead.”
Zhan He replied: “True, it is a black cow, but the white mark is on its horn.”
Men were sent to check, and indeed it was a black cow with cloth wrapped around its horn.
Zhan He’s clever trick dazzles ordinary people, appearing brilliant yet perilous. Hence it is called “the superficial bloom of the Dao.”
If one abandons Zhan He’s subtle guesswork and sends a simple five‑foot‑tall boy to see, even he would know it is a black cow with cloth on its horn.
Zhan He exhausts his mind and spirit only to reach the same conclusion as a simple boy; thus this is “the beginning of folly.”
Therefore the saying goes: “Foresight is the superficial bloom of the Dao and the beginning of folly.”

This passage delivers a pragmatic lesson: groundless intuitive foresight is empty cleverness, not real wisdom. True judgment comes from direct observation and objective facts rather than speculative trickery.

先物行先理動之謂前識，前識者，無緣而忘意度也。何以論之？詹何坐，弟子侍，有牛鳴於門外，弟子曰：「是黑牛也而白題。」詹何曰：「然，是黑牛也，而白在其角。」使人視之，果黑牛而以布裹其角。以詹子之術，嬰眾人之心，華焉殆矣，故曰「道之華也」。嘗試釋詹子之察，而使五尺之愚童子視之，亦知其黑牛而以布裹其角也。故以詹子之察，苦心傷神，而後與五尺之愚童子同功，是以曰「愚之首也」。故曰：「前識者道之華也，而愚之首也。」
