Chapter 5. The Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition [Three Kingdoms]

In the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Dong Zhuo plunged the imperial court into chaos, leaving the people in misery. Amidst the turmoil, who would step forward as a true hero? Though Cao Cao was often seen as cunning, could he rally the warlords across the land to unite against Dong Zhuo?

Dong Zhuo’s authoritarian rule ignited widespread outrage among the regional lords. Driven by a sense of righteousness, Cao Cao conspired with Wang Yun to assassinate Dong Zhuo. However, the attempt failed unexpectedly, forcing Cao Cao to flee Luoyang. Undeterred, he gathered forces and issued a forged imperial edict, summoning the warlords to assemble at Suanzao and swear an oath to overthrow Dong Zhuo.

The Grand Coalition and Initial Victories

In response, seventeen warlords, including Bao Xin, Yuan Shu, and Han Fu, gathered and elected Yuan Shao as their coalition leader. They sealed their alliance with a solemn oath. The coalition army, formidable in momentum, achieved early successes. The valiant warrior Sun Jian, Governor of Changsha, led his troops straight to the Sishui Pass. However, internal strife soon emerged: Yuan Shu, envious of Sun Jian, deliberately cut off his supply lines, destabilizing the army’s morale. Seizing the opportunity, Hua Xiong charged out of the pass to challenge the coalition. His martial prowess was terrifying—he slew several coalition generals in succession, plunging the allies into panic. At this critical moment, Guan Yu stepped forward and beheaded Hua Xiong so quickly that his wine is still warm when returned, displaying unparalleled heroism.

The Legend of Three Heroes Battle Lü Bu

Shocked by Hua Xiong’s death, Dong Zhuo sent Lü Bu to confront the coalition. Armed with his iconic halberd and riding the legendary Red Hare steed, Lü Bu exuded invincibility. None in the coalition could match him. Zhang Fei, fierce and impulsive, charged into battle first, engaging Lü Bu in fifty rounds of intense combat with no clear winner. Seeing this, Guan Yu joined the fray with his Green Dragon Crescent Blade. The three fought another thirty rounds, still locked in stalemate. Then, Liu Bei, brandishing his twin swords, entered the battle. The three heroes united to confront Lü Bu in an epic showdown known as the “Three Heroes Battle Lü Bu.” Though Lü Bu was peerless in valor, he could not withstand the combined might of the three and was forced to retreat. The coalition’s initial momentum was solidified, and the legendary battle became a timeless testament to heroism in the Three Kingdoms era.
