The term originates from the Analects. Confucius once stated, “At sixty, my ear was an obedient organ for the reception of truth” (or “At sixty, my ears were attuned”).
This means that by the age of sixty, one can fully comprehend the subtle implications hidden within words, readily accepting what is right while remaining unperturbed by what is incorrect. Consequently, “Er Shun” has since been used as a literary synonym for the age of sixty.
