Han Feizi – Chapter 22.5

The people of Jin launched an attack on Xing. Duke Huan of Qi planned to send troops to rescue it. Bao Shu said: “It is too early to act. If Xing does not fall, Jin will not be worn down; if Jin remains strong, Qi will not gain greater prestige. Moreover, the merit of aiding a state in peril is less remarkable than the virtue of reviving a fallen state. You had better delay the rescue to exhaust Jin’s strength, which will bring real benefits to Qi. Wait until Xing is conquered, then restore it you will win both glorious fame and substantial gains.” Duke Huan thus abandoned the rescue.
