Why is the Partition of Jin regarded as the dividing line between the Spring & Autumn and the Warring States periods?

The Partition of Jin among the Three Families is regarded as the dividing line between the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period mainly because it marked the complete collapse of the patriarchal system of the Zhou Dynasty and the formal formation of the pattern of the Seven Powerful States in the Warring States Period.

Why is it an important dividing line?

  • Fundamental transformation of the political order: Although the power of the Zhou royal family declined during the Spring and Autumn Period, in name, the order of “military and political decisions are made by the Son of Heaven” was still maintained. When King Weilie of Zhou officially enfeoffed the three families of Han, Zhao, and Wei as vassal states in 403 BCE, it was equivalent to officially recognizing the legitimacy of the subordinates challenging their superiors, completely breaking the original patriarchal system.
  • Remodeling of the power structure: The State of Jin was one of the most powerful vassal states in the Spring and Autumn Period. Its division directly led to the birth of three states (Han, Zhao, and Wei) among the Seven Powerful States in the Warring States Period, forming a new pattern of the Seven Powerful States standing side by side, and the situation changed from “rivalry among major powers” to “rivalry among the Seven Powerful States”.
  • Change in the nature of wars: During the Spring and Autumn Period, wars were relatively restricted by “etiquette” and were of a smaller scale; while in the Warring States Period, wars were more brutal and on a larger scale, with the goal of completely eliminating the opponent, laying the groundwork for the later unification wars.
  • A demarcation point in historical records: Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian starts with the “Partition of Jin among the Three Families”, marking the official beginning of the Warring States Period. It can be seen that later historians also generally recognized the historical demarcation significance of this event.

This event not only changed the political map at that time but also symbolized that Chinese history entered the Warring States Period of “reforming and strengthening the country” from the Spring and Autumn Period of “respecting the king and expelling the barbarians”. There were fundamental changes in the social system, ideology and culture, and military strategy.
