Why did Planet Venus favor Wukong?

While Journey to the West never explicitly links Great White Planet Venus (the Golden Star‌) to Buddhism, his consistent support for Sun Wukong and the pilgrimage mission raises questions.

‌Before Tripitaka acquired disciples, the Great White Golden Star personally came to his rescue. In Chapter 12, the Golden Star first saved Tripitaka from mortal tigers. Repeatedly, this deity warned the Tang Monk and his disciples of hidden dangers ahead. When Sun Wukong was at his wits’ end, the Great White Star timely appeared, offering invaluable guidance. It’s safe to say that at every critical juncture, the Great White Golden Star would manifest to help the scripture-seeking team clear their obstacles.‌

The Celestial Diplomat’s Mandate

As a core figure in the celestial bureaucracy, his role resembled that of a “diplomat” or “mediator.” Charged with maintaining cosmic order across the Three Realms, his strategy prioritized conflict resolution over escalation — aligning with his duty to preserve stability at minimal cost.

Foreseeing Potential

Venus’ advocacy for pacification over annihilation reflected a profound foresight regarding Wukong’s potential. Recognizing the monkey was no ordinary demon, he understood that suppression might breed future chaos (e.g., retaliation from Wukong’s allies or powers behind). Instead, by offering amnesty and guidance, he transformed a threat into an asset for Heavenly Court.

Wukong’s rebelliousness stemmed from defiance of authority, not inherent evil. Venus repeatedly interceded for him — even after the Havoc in Heaven, he argued for sparing Wukong’s life rather than execution.

Balancing Cosmic Powers

Within the Three Realms, Taoism (represented by Heaven) and Buddhism (led by Tathagata Buddha) coexisted through delicate rivalry and cooperation. Venus’ actions subtly maintained this equilibrium.

The pilgrimage was not solely a Buddhist endeavor but a trilateral stability project: Tathagata sought to spread Buddhist influence; Heaven needed to neutralize wildcards like Wukong while preventing either faith’s dominance. Venus thus supported the mission as a strategic move to preserve cosmic balance.
