Why was the Lion King the “Leader” among the three fiends of Lion-Camel Ridge?

Within the Lion Camel Kingdom (and Lion Camel Ridge) alliance of Journey to the West, the Green Lion Spirit’s position as leader among the trio — Green Lion, White Elephant, and Roc Demon — was not merely due to lineage or combat prowess.

Rather, multidimensional factors shaped this hierarchy, reflecting both logistical pragmatism and profound symbolic significance.

Founder’s Authority

The Green Lion Spirit was the original conqueror of Lion Camel Ridge. He established the stronghold, subdued the territory, and built its foundational infrastructure — including minion armies and regional control systems. And this was the reason why they were called the “Lion Camel Ridge” and “Lion Camel Kingdom”.

The White Elephant Spirit and Roc Demon joined later as allies or franchise partners. As the founder, the Green Lion inherently possessed legitimacy of leadership.

Symbolic Hierarchy

Each member embodied sacred symbolism:

  • The Green Lion (mount of Manjusri Bodhisattva) represented Wisdom
  • The White Elephant (mount of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva) signified Great Practice (Action)
  • The Roc Demon (symbolic kin to Tathāgata Buddha) epitomized Untamed Power

In Buddhist cosmology, Wisdom governs Action and restrains Chaos — a natural justification for the Green Lion’s primacy.

Operational Compatibility

Despite sharing cruelty and greed, the Green Lion demonstrated superior strategic pragmatism:

  • Excelled at cost-benefit analysis for collective gain
  • The White Elephant exhibited passive compliance, preferring subsidiary roles
  • The Roc Demon’s impetuousness and self-interest undermined leadership stability

The Green Lion’s tactical restraint and organizational cohesion proved indispensable for sustained dominion.
