3.14

The Master said, “Zhou could survey the two preceding dynasties. How great a wealth of culture! And we follow upon Zhou.”

子曰:「周監於二代,郁郁乎文哉!吾從周。」

Notes

This passage from the Analects shows Confucius’ profound tribute to the ritual civilization of the Zhou Dynasty. He viewed Zhou institutions not as mere innovation, but as building upon the rites of Xia and Shang dynasties—refining their essence while discarding flaws, thus achieving unprecedented cultural synthesis. Among the Three Dynasties, Zhou’s institutions and civilization stood as his highest ideal and most cherished model.

“We know in what ways the Yin (Shang) modified ritual when they followed upon the Xia. We know in what ways the Zhou modified ritual when they followed upon the Yin (Shang).”(Analects 2.23)

Confucius’ reverence for Zhou transcended nostalgia; it embodied his devoted guardianship of civilization itself.
