8.3When Master Zeng was ill he summoned his disciples and said, “Free my feet, free my hands. The Songs (the Classic of Poetry) says:
4.15 The Master said, “Shen! My Way (Dao) has one (thread) that runs right through it.”
Master Zeng said, “Every day I examine myself on these three points: in acting on behalf of others, have I always been loyal to their interests? In intercourse with my friends, have I always been true to my word? Have I failed to repeat the precepts that have been handed down to me?”
Zeng Shen (505–435 BC), also known as Zengzi, was a prominent disciple of Confucius and one of the key figures in Confucianism.
