Dao De Jing – Chapter 10

The Dao De Jing (Tao Te Ching) not only expounds the metaphysical theory of the Dao but also contains invaluable teachings on its applied cultivation. Chapter 10 of the Dao De Jing delineates the essential process of spiritual refinement.

Can you embrace your soul and hold fast to the One without separation?
Can you concentrate your vital energy to attain the suppleness of an infant?
Can you cleanse your inner vision until it is spotless?
In loving the people and governing the state, can you act without cleverness?
When the gates of Heaven open and close, can you remain receptive like the female?
With clear understanding reaching in all directions, can you remain free of knowing?

Give life and nurture;
give birth but do not possess;
act but do not presume;
lead but do not dominate.

This is called profound virtue (mysterious De).

Psycho-Cosmic Unification

Integrate the hun (ethereal soul) and po (corporeal soul) to consolidate the vital essence, accessing states of transcendent contemplation.

Cognitive Purification

Dissolve mental disturbances and veils of ignorance (wuming), attaining crystalline awareness free from prejudice, akin to unblemished jade.

Mundane Test

Following internal refinement, reintegrate into the social flux to temper character. Amid trials, refine your formation.

Activate noetic wisdom through:

  • Embracing receptivity;
  • Preserving flexibility;
  • Harmonizing with the unforced rhythm of the Dao.

This path leads to effortless awakening: comprehending the cosmic tapestry through pure intuitive resonance, transcending rational calculation.

Applied Philosophy

All manifest existence is phenomenal maya (illusion)— All the things arise and dissolve in infinite cycles. True mastery resides in:

  • Allowing natural flourishing;
  • Guiding without coercion;
  • Existing as a non-possessive witness.

Further Reading

The line in Chapter Ten, “Cleansing the mind’s mysterious mirror, can it be without blemish?” (cleanse your inner vision until it is spotless) is directly related to Chapter Four’s “The Dao is empty, yet when used it is not exhausted.” Chapter Four describes the Dao’s emptiness and infinite potential, while Chapter Ten emphasizes the importance of clearing away distractions and returning to one’s original nature through “cleansing the mysterious mirror.” Together, they elucidate the principle of self-cultivation: “clarity arises from stillness.”

The phrase in Chapter Ten, “Concentrating the vital energy to achieve softness, can one become like an infant?” forms a progressive relationship with Chapter Forty-Eight’s “In the pursuit of the Dao, one reduces day by day, reducing again and again until one reaches non-action.” Chapter Ten emphasizes returning to an infant-like purity through “concentrating the vital energy to achieve softness,” while Chapter Forty-Eight further explains that self-cultivation requires continuously eliminating attachments and diminishing desires. Together, they constitute a methodology for self-cultivation that progresses from external actions to inner disposition.
