Caigentan 85. Cultivating readiness in leisure, stillness and solitude

When at leisure do not let precious time slip idly by. You will discover the great value of such advice in your busy days.

In times of tranquillity do not forget to improve yourself. You will see the importance of this when you get down to work.

If you can resist all temptations when you are alone, your behaviour in public will be impeccable.

闲中不放过,忙处有受用;静中不落空,动处有受用;暗中不欺隐,明处有受用。

Notes

This passage from Cai Gen Tan (Tending the roots of wisdom) juxtaposes three states—leisure/hustle, stillness/action, darkness/light—revealing how daily cultivation shapes critical moments. It emphasizes consistent self-awareness and virtuous accumulation across all circumstances.

  • How you use idle time determines your capacity amid chaos;
  • What you cultivate in silence empowers your direction in motion;
  • Who you are in darkness defines your credibility in the spotlight.
