Caigentan 84. Elegance in adversity

The poor man sweeps his floor until it is spotless. The poor woman combs her hair until it is neat and tidy. Neither produces a wonderful sight, but these actions bespeak a sensibility of elegance.

So how can a man of learning get downhearted when he encounters poverty and misfortune, and abandon his ambitions?

贫家净扫地,贫女净梳头,景色虽不艳丽,气度自是风雅。士君子一当穷愁寥落,奈何辄自废弛哉!

Notes

“Self-respect amid scarcity” reveals greater character strength than prosperity’s glamour. Impoverished homes keep floors clean; destitute women tidy their hair. Though devoid of luxury, their dignity radiates quiet refinement.

True cultivation shines in prosperity but endures in adversity—this unwavering discipline distinguishes nobility from mediocrity. Authentic elegance is the spirit of never lowering one’s standards, regardless of circumstance. It shields the poor from inferiority, the rich from arrogance, the fortunate from frivolity, and the struggling from despair.
