Caigentan 109. Present indulgence vs. Future atonement

The ailments of old age have their roots in the prime of life. The hardships and suffering which come after the decline of one’s career have their roots in its acme of success.

That is why a man of virtue is especially careful in his heyday.

老来疾病,都是壮时招的;衰后罪孽,都是盛时造的。故持盈履满,君子尤兢兢焉。

Notes

Present indulgence vs. Future cost

Negligence during prime years (youth/prosperity) exacts a heavier toll in adversity (age/decline).

Peak discipline vs. Crisis management

True nobility lies in vigilance during success — preventing “zenith-to-collapse” tragedies before they begin.
