The Analects – Chapter 9.28

Confucius said, “Only when the year turns cold do we know that the pine and cypress are the last to shed their leaves.”

Note

Using a natural metaphor, this passage from the Analects of Confucius illustrates that true character is revealed only in adversity. In fair weather, all plants flourish, making it hard to distinguish who possesses genuine resilience. But in “the coldest season” – symbolizing personal hardship, social chaos, or moral trials – those who, like pine and cypress, remain steadfast in virtue and unwavering in purpose stand out. Confucius thus emphasizes that a true junzi (noble person) is not defined by conduct in easy times, but by unwavering commitment to righteousness amid difficulty. This quality of “being the last to wither” embodies core Confucian virtues: perseverance, loyalty, trustworthiness, and enduring moral strength. The saying both honors those of steadfast character and encourages others to cultivate inner fortitude through trials, for only then can one attain true moral stature.

The Master said, “The noble person remains firm in poverty; the petty person, when poor, sinks into excess and disorder.” Analects 15.2 (Wei Ling Gong)

Both contrast how the junzi and the petty person respond to hardship – only the former maintains integrity under pressure, like the pine in winter.

Zengzi said, “A scholar must be broad-minded and resolute, for his burden is heavy and his road long. To take humaneness as one’s mission – is that not weighty? To continue until death – is that not distant?” Analects 8.7 (Tai Bo)

Emphasizes enduring commitment through difficulty – resonates with the pine’s persistence through “year-end cold.”

The Master said, “The commander of an army may be taken, but the will of an ordinary man cannot be taken from him.” Analects 9.26 (Zi Han)

Both affirm the inviolability of inner resolve in the face of external pressure – moral steadfastness as the mark of true character.
