Xie Xuan (343–388 CE), courtesy name Youdu, was a native of Yangxia, Chen Commandery (modern-day Taikang, Henan). He was the nephew of the eminent statesman Xie An.
From a young age, Xie Xuan displayed exceptional talent. He was recruited as a clerk by the powerful general Huan Wen, under whom he later served as Army Adjutant (Sima) and Administrator of Nan Commandery.
In 377 CE, Xie An recommended his nephew Xie Xuan to serve as General Who Establishes Martial Might (Jianwu Jiangjun) and Inspector of Yan Province, tasked with defending the eastern frontiers against invasions by the Former Qin – a powerful northern regime led by Fu Jian.
Recognizing the need for a capable fighting force, Xie Xuan recruited brave and battle-hardened refugees from the north and forged them into an elite unit known as the “Beifu Army” (North Headquarters Troops or Northern Garrison Army). This force would become the backbone of Eastern Jin’s military resistance.
In 379 CE, Xie Xuan successfully repelled multiple Former Qin offensives at key locations including Xuyi (northeast of modern Xuyi County, Jiangsu), Huaiyin (in Jiangsu), and Jun River (north of Xuyi), securing critical victories that stabilized the southern defenses.
His most celebrated achievement came during the Battle of Fei River (Feishui) in 383 CE. As Frontline Commander-in-Chief (Xianfeng Dudu), Xie Xuan ordered his subordinate general Liu Laozhi to launch a daring night raid on the Luojian River (east of modern Huainan, Anhui). The surprise attack shattered the Qin vanguard, boosting Jin morale and setting the stage for the decisive victory in which 80,000 Jin troops routed Fu Jian’s claimed million-man army – one of history’s most famous examples of a smaller force defeating a vastly superior one.
Following the triumph at Fei River, Xie Xuan led successful northern expeditions, reclaiming vast territories including parts of Henan, Shandong, and southern Shaanxi – temporarily restoring Jin control over much of the Central Plains.
In 387 CE, suffering from illness, he resigned his military command and was reassigned as General of the Left and Administrator of Kuaiji. He died shortly thereafter while still in office.
Xie Xuan’s leadership, strategic foresight, and creation of the Beifu Army not only saved the Eastern Jin from collapse but also shaped the military landscape of the Southern Dynasties for generations.
