The turbulent era of the Three Kingdoms saw the emergence of numerous heroes, and the land of Xuzhou once again became a focal point of conflict. As Tao Qian offered Xuzhou to Liu Bei three times, did Liu Bei accept it? Meanwhile, how would the great battles between Cao Cao and Lü Bu reshape history?
The Strategic Importance of Xuzhou
During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, the empire was in chaos, with warlords carving out their own territories and war raging everywhere. Xuzhou, a strategic location, became a key prize contested by various forces. Seeking revenge, Cao Cao led a massive army to attack Xuzhou, leaving devastation in his wake and plunging the common people into deep misery.
Tao Qian’s Three Offers and Liu Bei’s Reluctance
Tao Qian, the Governor of Xuzhou, was a benevolent ruler. Witnessing the suffering of the people, he grew increasingly anxious. Knowing he could not withstand Cao Cao’s assault, and having heard of Liu Bei’s reputation for virtue, who had just rescued Kong Rong in Beihai, Tao Qian decided to offer Xuzhou to Liu Bei to ensure the people’s safety. Liu Bei, having only recently arrived and feeling he had no merit or virtue to his name, firmly declined. Tao Qian, impressed by Liu Bei’s humility, persisted in his persuasion. At this critical moment, Cao Cao was forced to retreat when Chen Gong betrayed him and Lü Bu attacked his base in Yan Province. Although the immediate threat to Xuzhou was lifted, dangers still lurked everywhere. As Tao Qian fell seriously ill, he once again summoned Liu Bei to Xuzhou, intending to entrust the region to him. Liu Bei remained humble, but many urged him to accept, arguing that the people of Xuzhou needed a benevolent ruler for their protection. Liu Bei began to waver but still did not give a definitive answer.
Liu Bei’s Acceptance and the Ongoing Conflict
The third time, Tao Qian, on his deathbed, took Liu Bei’s hand and earnestly expressed his final wish. Moreover, powerful clans in Xuzhou, such as Mi Zhu, Chen Gui and Chen Deng, also actively promoted Liu Bei’s takeover of Xuzhou. Deeply moved, Liu Bei finally accepted the governance of Xuzhou. After Cao Cao’s withdrawal, he did not abandon his ambitions for Xuzhou. He engaged in fierce battles with Lü Bu at Puyang and other locations, a contest of wits and courage between two formidable adversaries. Cao Cao set fire to Lü Bu’s camp, while Lü Bu fought fiercely to break through the encirclement. In this age of chaos, heroes from all sides displayed their unique strategies and valor, each demonstrating their extraordinary capabilities.
