He redressed unjust cases from Qianlong’s literary inquisition, pardoned critical scholar Hong Liangji, and issued a self‑blaming edict during a severe drought. Heavy rain fell the night Hong was pardoned, showing the emperor’s repentance and commitment to good governance.
