Record of a Night Walk at Chengtian Temple

– by Su Shi (Song Dynasty)

On the night of the twelfth day of the tenth month in the sixth year of Yuanfeng, I had just taken off my clothes and was about to sleep when the moonlight shone through my door. Delighted, I got up and went for a walk. Thinking there was no one to share this joy with, I went to Chengtian Temple to look for Zhang Huaimin. Huaimin had not yet gone to bed either, so we strolled together in the courtyard.

Beneath us, the courtyard seemed filled with clear, still water – so luminous and transparent that it looked like a pool reflecting the sky. In it, crisscrossing strands of algae and waterweeds appeared to drift – but these were, in fact, only the shadows of bamboo and pine trees.

Which night lacks moonlight? Where can’t you find bamboo and pines? It’s just that few people have the leisure – and the spirit – of the two of us.
