The ears can hear flattering sounds; the eyes can be dazzled by silver and gold. These effects are enemies encroaching from without, whereas carnal desires are robbers hidden within.
You must maintain vigilance at all times against these enemies. Seat yourself in the central hall and equip yourself with a sober mind, and you will surely be able to turn your enemies into helpmates.
耳目见闻为外贼,情欲意识为内贱。只是主人翁惺惺不昧,独坐堂中,贼便化为家人矣!
Notes
The dual source and nature of distraction
Human distractions stem from both external temptations and internal roots, which often collude with each other.
External Thieves
External allurements like fame, wealth, and sensory pleasures “loot” one’s focus and inner peace through the eyes and ears, even driving one to abandon principles in pursuit of them.
Internal Thieves
Inner desires and emotions, though natural responses, become “thieves” when uncontrolled. They disrupt rationality, provoke impulsive decisions, and may ultimately harm oneself and others.
Awareness is the key to transformation
Maintain clear consciousness, sharpen discernment against external temptations, and strengthen mastery over inner impulses.
