Caigentan 139. Virtue anchors talent

Virtue is the master of talent, and talent is the servant of virtue. Talent without virtue is like a household without a master and run entirely by the servants.

How many masters are there who have their houses run entirely by the servants and yet without making a havoc of their homes?

德者才之王,才者德之奴。有才无德,如家无主而奴用事矣,几何不魍魍猖狂。

Notes

Virtue is the root anchoring one’s existence; talent merely ornaments the branches.

Talent without virtue breeds chaos and harm — unchecked by moral compass.

Character is life’s root system; talent mere foliage embellishment.

Only when roots are firm can foliage flourish;
Should roots decay, the denser the growth, the more catastrophic the fall.
