Caigentan 130. Between insight and integrity

Do not discard your views just because others doubt them. Do not stick stubbornly to your own opinions while rejecting out of hand those of others.

Do not harm the general interest for private ends. Do not try to muster public opinion to achieve your own satisfactions.

毋因群疑而阻独见,毋任己意而废人言,毋私小惠而伤大体,毋借公论以快私情。

Notes

The skepticism of the majority is not always correct. Only by adhering to well-considered ‘independent insights’ can one avoid being swept away by crowd mentality. While personal judgments are inevitably limited, embracing others’ reasonable perspectives allows one to transcend cognitive blind spots.

The dialectic between short-term gains and long-term vision requires resisting the lure of ‘petty advantages’ to safeguard foundational principles. The boundaries between public authority and private grievances, between collective justice and personal sentiments, must never be breached. Abusing ‘public consensus’ erodes credibility.

Upholding these boundaries honors both ‘justice itself’ and one’s own integrity.
