When your mind is befuddled you must concentrate and gather your thoughts together. When you feel too much tension, you must relax by putting the matter on hand aside.
If you only know how to concentrate but not how to relax, then your confusion will be replaced by mental instability.
念头昏散处要知提醒,念头吃紧时要知放下;不然恐去昏昏之病,又来憧憧扰矣。
Notes
Moderate ease is cultivation; excessive ease is indulgence. Lax thoughts unaddressed lead one astray in numbness.
Moderate tension is drive; excessive tension is bondage. Relentless strain unrelieved exhausts one in anxiety.
Inner cultivation lies not in relentless strain or passive ease, but in dynamic balance between states. Be vigilant without rigidity; release without attachment. Only thus can one maintain clarity and serenity amid life’s oscillations.
