Caigentan 118. Beyond novelty and extremes

A person who is fascinated by wonders and novelties is one who cannot have far-reaching knowledge.

A person who is uniquely self demanding will not be able to preserve his virtue for very long.

惊奇喜异者,无远大之识;苦节独者者行,非恒久之操。

Notes

True foresight dwells in the ordinary—for universal truths reveal themselves not in spectacle, but in quiet contemplation of the commonplace.

True character flows unforced—like breath, neither strained nor performed, yet radiating through daily acts to withstand time’s test.

Shared wisdom: Reject extremes; embrace return to essence. The ‘undisturbed mind’ anchors both insight and integrity.
