Caigentan 55. The paradox of plenty

Those who indulge in luxury and extravagance always find it hard to make both ends meet. Far better off are the frugal people who, although they have not enough, feel that they have enough and to spare!

A person of talent strives hard, and yet he only provokes widespread envy. Far better off is the bumpkin, who lives a comfortable life and preserves his innate nature!

奢者富而不足,何如俭者贫而有余;能者劳而府怨,何如拙者逸而全真。

Notes

Material-Spiritual equilibrium

  • Extravagance signifies boundless desire which inevitably induces wealth breeds anxiety.
  • Frugality signifies restrained need which leads to poverty yields abundance.

Thus, true wealth lies in mastering desire, not accumulating possessions.

Capability vs. Authenticity

The paradox of the capable:

  • Overburdened by responsibilities,
  • Resented for their prowess.

The Simple:

  • Embrace ease,
  • Preserve inner truth.

Brilliance invites burdens; unassuming grace guards peace.

Ultimate Insight:

This passage from Cai Gen Tan – Tending the roots of wisdom tells us that life’s quality springs not from having or doing more, but from finding equilibrium in conscious choice.
