Caigentan 13. Grace in Retreat

On a narrow path, step aside one pace so that others may pass. When treated to fine food, offer some of it to your fellow diners.

Such a manner of behaving in society will best ensure a person peace and happiness.

径路窄处,留一步与人行;滋味浓的,减三分让人尝;此是涉世一极安乐法。

Notes

This passage from Cai Gen Tan (Tending the roots of wisdom) conveys essential principles for conduct through vivid metaphors, emphasizing the value of tolerance, humility, and shared benefit.

Tolerance and Humility:

In interpersonal interactions — especially amid competition or limited resources — the willingness to step back and accommodate others reflects one’s magnanimity and modesty. Such actions ease conflicts and foster harmonious relationships.

Spirit of Sharing:

Whether material wealth or intangible gains (knowledge, experience, honor, etc.), adopt a spirit of sharing. Doing so aids others’ growth while earning respect and support for oneself.

Inner Peace and Fulfillment:

True joy often stems from caring for and contributing to others, not mere self-satisfaction. By offering opportunities and sharing joy, one attains deeper spiritual contentment and tranquility.

Building a Harmonious Society:

Broadly, if everyone practices this philosophy — acting with others in mind — society becomes more harmonious. This is a positive social value, urging people to transcend self-interest and pursue collective well-being.
