Yongjia Xuanjue, a monk from Wenzhou, initially practiced Tiantai meditation until he awakened upon reading the Vimalakīrti Sūtra. Lacking a master’s confirmation, he met Dongyang Xuance — a disciple of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng — who urged him to seek verification at Caoxi.
Arriving at Huineng’s assembly, Xuanjue circled the master’s seat thrice without bowing, then stood upright.
Huineng demanded:
“A monk should observe 3,000 dignities and 80,000 subtleties. From whence comes this rudeness?”
Xuanjue retorted:
“Life-death is urgent; impermanence is swift.”
Huineng challenged:
“Why not grasp birthless-deathless truth, realizing neither swiftness nor slowness?”
Xuanjue countered:
“Grasping is birthless; realization is neither swift nor slow.”
Huineng exclaimed:
“So it is! So it is!” (to the assembly’s astonishment).
Only then did Xuanjue bow. As he prepared to leave, Huineng asked:
“Must you depart so hastily?”
Xuanjue replied:
“Fundamentally unmoving — how could it be hasty?”
Huineng: “Who knows this unmoving state?”
Xuanjue: “You impose ‘moving’ and ‘unmoving’!”
Huineng praised:
“You deeply understand birthless-deathless meaning.”
Xuanjue deflated:
“Can birthless-deathless possess meaning?!”
Huineng pressed:
“Without meaning, what distinguishes?”
Xuanjue delivered the final blow:
“Distinguishing itself is meaningless!”
Huineng, marveling, insisted:
“Profound! Stay one night.”
Thus, Xuanjue — unknown to the monks and gone by dawn — earned the name “One-Night-Awakened Monk”.
Philosophical Notes
Formalities vs. Urgent Truth
Xuanjue’s refusal to bow symbolized Zen’s rebellion against empty ritual. His cry — “Life-death is urgent!” — prioritized existential awakening over ceremonial piety.
“Unmoving” as Absolute Freedom
The debate on haste revealed core Zen insight: Enlightenment transcends all dualities (moving/unmoving, swift/slow). Xuanjue’s “distinguishing itself is meaningless” dissolved conceptual traps.
One-Night Awakening
Huineng’s invitation to stay wasn’t hospitality — it was instant recognition of Xuanjue’s maturity. The single night became legend: True awakening needs no prolonged validation.
