–Wang Wei
Alone I sit among the quiet bamboos,
Carefreely I play on lute and croon.
Deep in the woods, no human soul doth know my stay,
Only the bright moon comes to shed its gentle ray.
竹里馆
— [唐]王维
独坐幽篁里,
弹琴复长啸。
深林人不知,
明月来相照。
Note
In the year 736, the Tang Empire was at the zenith of the Kaiyuan Era’s prosperity. Yet beneath this golden age lay hidden political, economic, and social issues. Only a handful of individuals remained clearly aware that the empire was already fraught with crises—among them, Chancellor Zhang Jiuling. Unfortunately, the aging Emperor Xuanzong, indulging in pleasures and swayed by slander, dismissed Zhang Jiuling and appointed the treacherous Li Linfu as his second-in-command. From then on, the imperial court descended into chaos under Li Linfu’s machinations.
During this period, Wang Wei also faced exclusion and pressure from Li Linfu, gradually marginalized from the center of power. For several years, he moved from post to post across different regions, growing weary both physically and mentally. Eventually, he sought refuge in his Wangchuan Villa in Lantian, embarking on a life that was semi-official and semi-reclusive.
Wang Wei had embraced Buddhism early in life, cultivating a transcendent perspective. In his later years, as he himself expressed, he desired only tranquility and detachment from worldly concerns. Thus, he often sat alone in the depths of a bamboo grove, softly strumming the strings of his zither to express his inner solitude and emotions, channeling his reflections into poetry.
“The Bamboo Lodge” or “The Bamboo Hut” was born during this period. The poem masterfully blends scene and emotion, harmonizes sound and silence, and balances movement and stillness, unfolding before the reader like an elegantly understated ink-wash painting.
Sitting alone in the bamboo forest, Wang Wei may have seemed profoundly lonely, yet this solitude was not passive but actively chosen. He preferred the seclusion of the deep bamboo grove to the intrigues of the court, cherishing the peace and freedom it offered. As he played his zither and sang, he seemed to merge into the embrace of nature. The surrounding forest was steeped in silence, with no one aware of his presence. But when the moon rose, it became like a silent confidant, quietly accompanying him and fulfilling his deep-seated yearning for tranquility and solace.
